Merry Christmas And Thank You

MONDAY, DECEMBER 26TH, 2011

Open Class 5:00pm / 6:00pm

Athena Class 3:30pm

This Christmas I received about the best gift I think I could've from many of you. A couple of months ago my wonderful sister began putting together a collection of quotes and testimonials from as many of my athletes (past and present) that she could get her hands on. She then paired these awesome words with a bunch of the pictures that I've taken of many of you throughout the years and threw them together into an amazing scrapbook.

I can't begin to tell you how much what you said meant to me. My sister gave me the book Tuesday night and I have read through it every night so far. Reading what you wrote is truly inspiring to me and pushes me to be better at what I do. I don't know how to thank all of you enough for this incredible gift.

If you want to see the scrapbook I'll bring it to the gym with me and you're more than welcome to show up to class early and take a look at it.

For those of you who didn't get to have your quotes put into the book I would still love to get them from you as soon as possible. I would like to keep continually adding them as I get them.

Sincerely, thank you. And thank you Sara. What a great idea!

Additionally, my brother came up with an awesome idea and made me a gift of his own. Check out what I'll be practicing on when I get home from now on:

Cheridan PR's Deadlift By 60 lbs!

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 21ST, 2011

Open Class 4:30pm

Athena Class 5:30pm

Olympic Lifting Class (with Coach Jordan) 5:30pm

NOTE: If you are craving a regular Performance Quest Class come on in to the 4:30pm slot, otherwise, bring $10 and take Coach Jordan's Olympic Lifting Class at 5:30pm. Olympic Lifting is something that we do a lot of but I don't key in on quite like Coach Jordan does. Taking his class will UNDOUBTEDLY make you better in many aspects of CrossFit as well as sport and everyday tasks. This is why I've worked out an agreement for us to take advantage of Jordan's expertise. Without offering you this opportunity I feel like I would be not fulfilling my duties as your coach to make you the best you can be.

Cheridan has been working hard preparing for her Senior year of softball as well as looking into the future preparing for next year, her first year of college softball as she will be pitching for the Oregon Ducks. She continues to just keep getting stronger. Here she PR's in her deadlift by 60 lbs with a 215 lb lift! Nice work Cher.

Attackin The Rep...Again!

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 20TH, 2011

Open Class 5:30pm / 6:30pm

Athena Class 3:30pm

A couple o' months ago I copied a post from the website 70's Big called, "Attacking the Rep". Even though I posted this only a short time ago I find it extremely pertinent at the moment to cover this concept again. Here's the deal...READ IT and WATCH THE VIDEO!

I don't know how to make myself more clear here. DO IT!

What's that you say?... Talk to the hand you say?...

I mean...C'mon ma'am. Just give it a go through. It's like less than 5 minutes and it has the motivational properties intwined so greatly within that your squat is likely to double during your next 3x5!

Well maybe that's a bit presumptuous but it certainly can't hurt...unless of course you don't read it - in which case, when asked if you've read and responded to said question with a defiant "NO", I reserve the right to bring upon you severe, everlasting hurt that will only make you want to do nothing more than go home and READ THE FRIGGIN' ARTICLE!

And if you think I'm not talking to you...YOU'RE WRONG!

Max Effort Day

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 16TH, 2011

Open Class 4:30pm / 5:30pm

Athena Class 3:00pm

On max effort days I'm usually too busy yelling and screaming to pull out my camera and take too many pictures, which I really need to get better at and be mindful about because max efforts make some of the best pictures.

Everyone did a great job on their lifts this week. There were some massive milestones hit for a lot of athletes and I think almost everyone PR'd on virtually every lift!

Keep up the hard work guys and gals. It's obviously paying off.

Should Athletes Train Like Bodybuilders?

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 14TH, 2011

Open Class 3:30pm / 4:30pm

Olympic Lifting Class 5:30pm

Athena Class 5:30pm

NOTE: I will be holding our regular class at 3:30pm and 4:30pm but am giving you the option of coming to the Olympic Lifting Class held by Coach Jordan at 5:30pm. If you wish, you are more than welcome to do the 4:30pm workout and then do Oly Lifting Class afterward. Also, please show up at least 15 minutes early if you are attending one of the open class times to allow for extended warm up time for the programmed workout for this day.

Below I've posted a PHENOMENAL article by Dr. Joseph Mercola, which demonstrates many of the fundamental differences in various types of training as it relates to your sport or your goal.

However, even with how much I love the message of this article, of course I can always find something that I don't necessarily agree with (you know me!). To that extent, today I AM CHALLENGING YOU to find the major part of the article below that I don't agree with. Many of you have heard me speak on this subject before and I know that there are some of you that have not, but either way, give it a go. Dr. Mercola does a very good job making this part of the article convincing. So much so that he almost had me switching my position on the issue!

So, read the article. See what you think. Share it with your friends if necessary. I know we all have a friend or two who really needs to hear this!

Performance Quest Athletes Dominating The Hardwood

MONDAY, DECEMBER 12TH, 2011

Open Class 5:30pm / 6:30pm

Athena Class 3:30pm

What another great weekend for Performance Quest athletes.

Foothill High School travelled to the Bay Area this weekend and brought the championship home beating host Drake High School 47-45 in the final match up of the Red Brown Invitational. Point guard Josh Smith was named tournament MVP and teammates Gabe Porter and Eli Putnam earned all-tournament selection honors. The 6-0 Cougars will travel down to the Sacramento High School St. Hope Elite Hoops Classic this week to try and extend their unbeaten record.

The Shasta High School boys basketball team stayed local this weekend and the result was 71-65 overtime championship title from the Lehigh Classic at Central Valley High School. Starting sophomore guard, Wade Gulden, played brilliantly this weekend and was flawless in the decisive overtime victory finishing with 16 points, 10 rebounds, and a steal. According to the Redding Record Searchlight, "At the end of the day for the Wolves the Lehigh championship credit was due to Gulden as much as anyone else." Shasta head coach, Bill Calloway, is quoted as saying, "He steps up. He's a big time player. We're looking for a lot of good things from Gulden in the future."

Digestion And Your Gut...Know Your Pie-Hole (Continued)

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 9TH, 2011

Open Class 4:30pm / 5:30pm

Athena Class 3:30pm

NOTE: If you want to come workout and absolutely cannot make it to one of the open class times and need to come in later please text me or email me and let me know and I will see about making arrangements for you to come in.

DIGESTION AND YOUR GUT...KNOW YOUR PIE-HOLE

Today we'll get through the last little piece of digestion and then we'll follow that up with absorption in the next nutrition post, leading us straight into the fun stuff FINALLY! At least what is fun for me. I know your eyes are probably glued to the screen with this stuff (if you're anything like me they actually are), but if you stop and think about it for a second this stuff actually pertains directly to your goals. It is imparative that you understand how these mechanisms work within your body to understand what you need to be eating when or why it is vitally critical that you don't eat certain things or don't eat certain things during certain times. Trust me, your success (or failure) depends on these basic concepts.

Last time we covered part the nutrition gamut we took a quick look at an introduction to Digestion and The Gut. Here I briefly covered some of the structures of the digestive tract and their basic functions. Today we're going to briefly go over some of the key players in digestion.

The small intestine is the part of the gastrointestinal tract where a majority of the chemical digestion and absorption of food (and food's associated nutrients and minerals) occurs. It is here that we see the addition of pancreatic enzymes (primarily secreted by - you guessed it - the pancreas), which further digest foods.

Pancreatic enzymes (aka: digestive enzymes) break down the macronutrients - proteins, carbohydrates, and fats - into thier smaller, fundamental building blocks.

Chemical breakdown of proteins begins in the stomach and continues in the large intestine. Proteins are broken down into peptides and amino acids by the enzyme protease. This enzyme helps keep the intestine free of parasites such as bacteria, yeast and protozoa.

Chemical breakdown of carbohydrates begins as soon as we put food in our mouth by way of salivary amylase and are broken down into monosaccharides (simple sugars) such as glucose, galactose, fructose, etc. Carbohydrate not broken down before reaching the intestines get hit with a dose of pancreatic amylase where mainly starchy carbohydrates are broken into oligosaccharides, which are essentially chains of monosaccharides. Anything not broken down by pancreatic amylase at this point gets leveled with what are called brush border enzymes (sucrase, lactase, maltase), with the exception of cellulose - which is not digested in humans.

Chemical breakdown of lipids (fats) are broken down by the enzyme lipase into fatty acids and glycerol. Pancreatic lipase teams up with bile salts from the liver and gall bladder to emulsify fats. Bile is absolutely critical for fat absorption as it acts like a surfactant. It is important to note that if you don't absorb fats you don't absorb essential vitamins and minerals, which could lead to cancer, osteoperosis, atherosclerosis, etc, etc.

To follow this up we'll cover some terms that you all have heard me talk about before in the villi and microvilli lining our intestinal wall. This is where the information starts to get gruesome and begins to "hit home" a little more.

Thanks for staying tuned.

One Reason To Love Training At CrossFit Redding and The Dumbbell Hang Squat Clean In Pictures

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 8TH, 2011

Open Class 5:30pm / 6:30pm

Athena Class 3:30pm

Why do I love training at CrossFit Redding? Honestly, there are hundreds, if not thousands of reasons. This just moved right up to the top of the list though. I found this guy likes to take his mid-day naps right across the street from our parking lot!

Wednesday we played around with 200m sprints and dumbbell hang squat cleans.

3...2...1...GO!
